Focus 3: Teachers

Recommendations

• Attract and hire the best possible teachers, and give them the necessary resources and authority to do their jobs. Clearly convey the values and standards of the school, offer salaries that are more closely aligned with the for-profit market, and demonstrate an understanding that teacher quality is key to student performance.
  
  
• Invest in mentoring, coaching, apprenticeship programs, and other forms of teacher learning to support new and veteran teachers.
  
  
• Create institutional structures and procedures for continuous professional development that is an integral part of the school day, rather than after-school workshops.
